Policies, Terms & Guidelines

Effective date: January 1, 2026 · Last updated: April 2026

These policies exist to make BittieTasks fair, safe, and trustworthy for every member of our community. Please read them. They are written in plain language on purpose.

Independent Contractor Status
Legal

You are an independent contractor, not an employee of BittieTasks.

BittieTasks is a technology platform that connects people who have tasks with people who can complete them. When you complete a task on BittieTasks, you are acting as an independent contractor providing services directly to the task poster — not as an employee, agent, or representative of BittieTasks, Inc.

This means:

  • You set your own schedule and choose which tasks to accept or decline
  • BittieTasks does not control how you complete a task, only that it meets the posted requirements
  • You are responsible for your own tools, transportation, and work methods
  • BittieTasks does not withhold income taxes from your earnings — you are responsible for reporting and paying your own taxes
  • You are not entitled to employee benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, or paid leave through BittieTasks

If you earn more than $600 from BittieTasks in a calendar year, you may receive a 1099-NEC form for tax reporting purposes. We recommend consulting a tax professional regarding your obligations.

Nothing in these terms creates an employer-employee, partnership, joint venture, or franchise relationship between you and BittieTasks.

Platform as Marketplace — Not an Employer
Important

BittieTasks is a technology marketplace, not an employer, staffing agency, or labor broker.

BittieTasks provides a platform that allows users to post tasks and connect with other users who can complete those tasks. BittieTasks is not a party to any agreement between task posters and task completers. All agreements, including price, scope of work, timeline, and quality standards, are made solely between the task poster and the task completer.

BittieTasks explicitly does not:

  • Employ, supervise, or direct the work of any task completer
  • Guarantee the quality, safety, legality, or completion of any task
  • Act as an agent or representative of any user
  • Provide workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, or any other employment benefit
  • Assume liability for the actions, omissions, or conduct of any user on or off the platform

Task completers are solely responsible for determining whether a task is appropriate for their skills, physical ability, and legal authority. Task posters are solely responsible for ensuring their posted tasks are legal, accurately described, and safely achievable.

Note on background checks: BittieTasks currently uses phone number verification to confirm that all accounts belong to real, identifiable people. Criminal background checks are not currently performed on all users. Users are responsible for exercising their own judgment when selecting task partners. Never share personal information or meet with someone you do not feel safe with. Your safety is your responsibility — the platform is a tool, not a guarantee.

Assumption of Risk & Release
Legal

By using BittieTasks, you assume full responsibility for risks associated with tasks you post or complete.

Assumption of Risk: You acknowledge that tasks posted on BittieTasks may involve physical activity, travel, entry into private property, or other activities that carry inherent risk of personal injury, property damage, or financial loss. You voluntarily assume all such risks.

Release and Waiver: To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, you hereby release, waive, discharge, and covenant not to sue BittieTasks, its officers, directors, employees, agents, and successors from any and all claims, damages, losses, costs, or expenses (including attorneys' fees) arising out of or related to:

  • Any task you post, apply for, accept, or complete through the platform
  • Any interaction — online or in-person — with another user of the platform
  • Any personal injury, property damage, or financial loss arising from a task
  • The conduct, actions, or omissions of any other user of the platform

Indemnification: You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless BittieTasks and its affiliates from any claims, liabilities, damages, costs, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from: (a) your use of the platform; (b) your violation of these terms; (c) your violation of any third-party rights; or (d) any task you post or complete, including any injuries or damages resulting therefrom.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or limitation of liability. In such jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by law.

Fair Pay & Minimum Payout Policy

BittieTasks enforces a minimum $15 payout per task to protect task completers from exploitation.

We believe that if someone's time and effort is worth hiring, it is worth paying fairly. All tasks posted on BittieTasks must offer at least $15 in total earnings. This is a hard platform minimum that cannot be overridden by task posters.

Platform fee structure (transparent and fixed):

3%
Solo Tasks
7%
Community Tasks
15%
Brand Tasks
0%
Barter Tasks

These fees are deducted from the task poster's payment before payout to completers. Fees are never added on top of the posted earnings amount — what you see is what the task poster committed to pay.

Task posters are encouraged to set payouts that reflect the actual time and skill required. BittieTasks reserves the right to remove tasks that appear designed to undervalue community members' labor.

Privacy Policy
Important

We will never sell your data. Ever. Full stop.

What we collect:

  • Your phone number (used only for account authentication)
  • Your first and last name (displayed on your profile)
  • Your general location (city/neighborhood, used to match you with nearby tasks)
  • Tasks you post, apply for, and complete
  • Messages you send through the platform
  • Transaction history (task payouts and platform fees)

What we do with it:

  • Authenticate your identity and keep your account secure
  • Match you with relevant tasks in your area
  • Process payments and maintain accurate transaction records
  • Send you task-related notifications (you can opt out at any time)
  • Improve the platform based on usage patterns (anonymized and aggregated)

What we never do:

  • We never sell your personal data to third parties
  • We never share your phone number with other users without your explicit consent
  • We never use your data for advertising outside the BittieTasks platform
  • We never store payment card details — all payments are processed by Stripe, which is PCI-compliant

Data retention: We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and data at any time by contacting support. Transaction records may be retained for up to 7 years for legal and tax compliance purposes.

Third-party services we use: Twilio (SMS verification), Stripe (payments), SendGrid (email notifications). Each of these providers is contractually prohibited from using your data for any purpose other than providing services to BittieTasks.

California Residents — CCPA Rights: If you are a California resident, you have the right to: (1) know what personal information we collect about you; (2) request deletion of your personal information; (3) opt out of the sale of your personal information (we do not sell your data, but you have this right); (4) non-discrimination for exercising your rights. To exercise these rights, contact us at support@bittietasks.com. We will respond within 45 days.

Data breach notification: In the event of a data breach that affects your personal information, we will notify affected users within 72 hours of becoming aware of the breach, as required by applicable law.

Do Not Track: BittieTasks does not currently respond to browser "Do Not Track" signals, as there is no industry standard for how to respond to such signals. We do not track users across third-party websites.

Terms of Service

By creating an account, you agree to these terms.

Eligibility: You must be at least 18 years old to use BittieTasks. By creating an account, you confirm that you are 18 or older and have the legal capacity to enter into a binding agreement.

Accurate information: You agree to provide truthful, accurate information when creating your account and when posting or applying for tasks. Misrepresentation is grounds for immediate account termination.

Account security: You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account. Do not share your login credentials. BittieTasks will never ask for your verification code via phone, email, or chat.

Task completion: When you accept a task, you are entering into an agreement with the task poster to complete the work as described. Accepting a task and not completing it without reasonable notice may negatively affect your trust score.

Payment: BittieTasks processes payments on behalf of task posters. Funds are held in escrow until task completion is verified. Payouts are released within 1-3 business days of verified completion.

Disputes: BittieTasks provides a dispute resolution process for payment disagreements. We review all disputes within 48 hours. Our decision is final for disputes under $500. Disputes above $500 may be referred to binding arbitration.

Termination: BittieTasks reserves the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, engage in fraudulent behavior, or harm other community members. You may also close your account at any time.

Limitation of liability: BittieTasks is a marketplace platform. We facilitate connections between people but are not a party to the agreements between task posters and completers. BittieTasks is not liable for the quality of work performed, personal injuries, property damage, or disputes arising from tasks. Our total liability is limited to the fees you have paid to BittieTasks in the 12 months preceding a claim.

Governing law: These terms are governed by the laws of the United States. Any disputes will be resolved in the jurisdiction where BittieTasks is incorporated.

Dispute Resolution & Arbitration
Legal

Please read this carefully. It affects your legal rights, including your right to file a lawsuit or participate in a class action.

Informal Resolution First: Before initiating any formal dispute process, you agree to contact BittieTasks at support@bittietasks.com and attempt to resolve the dispute informally. Most disputes can be resolved quickly this way. We will try to respond within 5 business days.

Binding Arbitration: If informal resolution fails, you and BittieTasks agree that any dispute, claim, or controversy arising out of or relating to these terms or your use of the platform — including disputes about the validity, enforceability, or scope of this arbitration agreement — will be resolved by binding individual arbitration, not in a court of law, except as noted below.

Arbitration will be conducted by a neutral arbitrator under the rules of the American Arbitration Association (AAA) or JAMS, as mutually agreed. The arbitration will take place in the United States. The arbitrator's decision will be final and binding and may be entered as a judgment in any court of competent jurisdiction.

Class Action Waiver: You and BittieTasks each agree that any dispute resolution proceedings will be conducted on an individual basis only — not as a class, consolidated, or representative action. If this specific waiver is found unenforceable, then the arbitration agreement will not apply to that dispute.

Exceptions — you may still bring claims in small claims court for:

  • Disputes that qualify for small claims court in your jurisdiction
  • Claims for emergency injunctive relief to prevent imminent harm
  • Claims related to intellectual property rights

If you do not agree to this arbitration agreement, you may opt out within 30 days of first accepting these terms by emailing support@bittietasks.com with the subject line "Arbitration Opt-Out" and your name and account phone number. Opting out will not affect any other terms.

Community Standards

BittieTasks is a community built on respect, trust, and mutual benefit. Treat every member as a neighbor.

We require all members to:

  • Treat all members with respect and dignity, regardless of background, race, gender, religion, age, or ability
  • Communicate honestly about task requirements, timelines, and expectations
  • Show up when you have committed to a task
  • Leave honest, constructive reviews that reflect your actual experience
  • Report safety concerns or policy violations promptly

Zero tolerance violations (immediate account ban):

  • Harassment, threats, or discrimination of any kind
  • Fraud, including fake reviews, identity misrepresentation, or payment manipulation
  • Posting illegal activities as tasks
  • Using the platform to solicit minors
  • Sharing another member's personal contact information without consent

Trust score system: Your trust score reflects your history on the platform — completed tasks, positive reviews, and consistent behavior improve it. Cancellations, disputes, and reports reduce it. Members with low trust scores may have limited access to certain task types.

Barter & Tax Policy
Tax Notice

Barter transactions are taxable income under US federal law. This is not optional or negotiable.

The IRS requires that the fair market value of goods or services you receive in a barter exchange be reported as income on your tax return — even if no money changes hands. This applies to all barter trades made through BittieTasks.

Your responsibilities as a barter participant:

  • Determine the fair market value of what you received
  • Report that value as income on your annual tax return (typically on Schedule C or as other income)
  • Keep records of barter transactions for your tax documentation
  • If you receive more than $600 in barter value in a year, you may receive a 1099-B form

BittieTasks does not provide tax advice. We strongly recommend consulting a qualified tax professional if you are uncertain about your barter income reporting obligations.

Brand Tasks & FTC Disclosure Requirements

If you are paid to promote, review, or talk about a brand's product, you must disclose this relationship. This is federal law.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires that any material connection between you and a brand — including payment, free products, or other compensation — be clearly disclosed when you share content about that brand publicly.

When you complete a brand task on BittieTasks:

  • If the task requires you to post on social media, write a review, or share content publicly, you must include a clear disclosure such as "#ad", "#sponsored", or "I received compensation for this post"
  • The disclosure must be placed where people will see it — not buried at the end or in small print
  • You must only share honest opinions. Do not make false claims about a product even if you are being paid
  • If a brand task asks you to post a fake review as if it were organic, refuse it and report it to BittieTasks — this violates our policies and federal law

BittieTasks reviews all brand task descriptions before they go live to ensure they comply with FTC guidelines. Task posters who require deceptive practices will have their campaigns removed and accounts terminated.

Reference: FTC Endorsement Guides (16 C.F.R. Part 255).
